Did you know that many English words, such as algebra and alchemy, are a loan from Arabic?
During the Middle Ages, Arabic was a major vehicle for culture in Europe, especially in science, mathematics and philosophy, and as a result it has lent many words to languages worldwide.
Arabic is usually split into three main variants that can be mutually unintelligible: Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial or dialectal Arabic. Standard Arabic is the official language of 26 countries (the third most after English and French) and is the variety most used in print and spoken Arabic media. If considered as a single language, there are more than 300 million native Arabic speakers.
